There's something brewing in Wallaceburg.
The Glasstown Brewing Company is finally set to open its doors in downtown Wallaceburg on Saturday and begin serving its own brewed craft beer.
The 1800s building at 331 James Street that backs onto the Sydenham River has been under renovation for nearly two years.
The doors open at 1 p.m. on Saturday with a limited menu. The Glasstown said its Bistro has the largest wood-burning stove in Wallaceburg and will be serving wood-fired pizza and pretzels this weekend and beyond until the menu can evolve into a more elaborate offering. Currently, the brewery is offering seven beers, but that number is expected to grow over time.
On Sunday afternoon, The Down River Band plays live from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. The band offers up a healthy dose of Pink Floyd, Tragically Hip, BTO, and Zeppelin covers, along with their own original music.
Owner and Founder Todd Shepley hopes the Glasstown can be a community, a family, a destination, and something that everyone in Wallaceburg can be proud of.
"It has been a long-time dream of mine to bring an upscale brewery and taproom to the heart of Wallaceburg. I’ve spent a lot of time travelling throughout the U.S. for my work in the tool and die industry and often found myself visiting different breweries situated along various riversides. It got me thinking that we could have this same experience right here in Chatham-Kent," said Shepley. "Being raised in Wallaceburg, and then raising my own family here, I’ve felt the incredible support this community has to offer and knew it was my time to give back."
Shepley said he wants to play an integral role in the revitalization of downtown Wallaceburg to create a place where communities strengthen, businesses thrive, and the town becomes a sought-after destination for those travelling by car or by boat.
Shepley thanks all involved in bringing his vision to reality, adding it has become "much more than initially planned."
He's also asking for patience because he anticipates opening weekend will be very busy.
If you plan a trip to Glasstown Brewery this weekend, you should know that seating inside the Taproom is by reservation only and it is full for Saturday.
Taproom reservations can still be made for Sunday and Monday by emailing events@glasstownbrewingco.ca.
The large outdoor patio is walk-in only.
