CK police dog tracks down man accused of crashing stolen vehicle

A call about a crash in Chatham on Monday led police on an early morning manhunt.

Chatham-Kent police said they received a call about a single vehicle crash on Poplar Street in Chatham just before 3 a.m. Monday and were able to confirm that the vehicle that was abandoned at the scene had been reported stolen from London.

That same vehicle had also fled from police during an attempted traffic stop about 30 minutes earlier on Clachan Road north of Bothwell.

Officers said they were able to track down a suspect after they got a call about someone knocking on the window of a home on Cornhill Street in Chatham shortly after 3 a.m. Monday.

Police said they chased after the suspect and were able to arrest him after deploying K9 Helix.

A 25-year-old London man was charged with one count each of flight from police, mischief, possession of stolen property, failing to remain at the scene of a crash, and driving without a license. He was also charged with two counts of dangerous driving.

The man was taken to police headquarters and was set to be held there pending a bail hearing.

Chatham-Kent man faces charges after trouble at the check-out

A 28-year-old Chatham-Kent man is in trouble with police after he allegedly threatened to hurt an employee and stole some items when his card was declined at the check-out.

Chatham-Kent police said that was at around 4 p.m. Sunday at a business on Dufferin Avenue in Wallaceburg.

Officers said they were told the man had threatened to harm an employee at the store if the card he was using to purchase some items didn't work.

He then allegedly took off when his card was declined and tried to steal a bicycle, but was not successful in doing that, either.

Police said they tried to arrest the man as soon as they arrived, but he allegedly took off running.

He was taken into custody after a short foot chase, at which point, police also allegedly found some items from the store on the man.

The 28-year-old man was charged with robbery, resisting a peace officer, and possession of stolen property.

He was taken to police headquarters and was set to be held there pending a bail hearing.

An early morning traffic stop in Bothwell led to the arrest of a 55-year-old Seaforth man who wasn't supposed to be behind the wheel.

Police said they arrested the man shortly after 1 a.m. Monday after pulling over a vehicle on West Bothwell Road.

Officers said they learned the man's driver's license was suspended and he also had a release condition that banned him from driving.

He was arrested, charged, and taken back to police headquarters before he was released with conditions and a future court date.
