A kitchen fire at an apartment in Chatham has caused $25,000 in damage.
Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue reported the fire at 59 Adelaide Street in Chatham started in the exhaust hood of the stove Wednesday night.
CK Fire spokesperson Whitney Burk said crews found smoke filling the apartment and moving into the hallway when they arrived just before 8:30 p.m., but were able to quickly extinguish the flames.
Burk noted a woman living there was able to get out safely and Victim Services and PAWS Animal Rescue found alternate accommodations for her and her cat until they are able to return home.
The blaze was contained to the apartment, smoke was cleared from the building, and all other tenants were able to return to their properties, according to CK Fire.
Burk said firefighters will return to the area on Thursday and visit surrounding homes to check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and discuss fire safety.
