Ontario Provincial Police said the number of crashes involving transport trucks has climbed to a 10 year high.
OPP responded to 9,110 collisions involving a transport in 2022, accounting for 12 per cent of all reported collisions on OPP patrolled roads and 71 fatalities.
Police said improper lane changes, following too closely and speed were the top primary causes in the crashes.
Of the 2,858 OPP-laid charges in transport truck-involved collisions last year, 1,098 were issued to drivers of passenger vehicles, and the remaining 1,760 charges were issued to commercial drivers.
The OPP, along with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), said they are ramping up enforcement and education around commercial motor vehicle safety, as part of a joint effort to address the upward trend in transport truck-involved collisions.
Operation Safe Driver runs from Sunday, July 9 to Saturday, July 15.
