Vaughn Pugh, a respected conductor from Chatham, is marking a milestone as he enters his 40th season leading the Chatham Concert Band.
A surprise tribute was held at Tecumseh Park on Wednesday, where the Chatham Concert Band gathered to honour Vaughn Pugh's remarkable dedication and leadership spanning four decades.
Mark Broadbent, President of Chatham Concert Band, told CK News Today since 1984, Vaughn has been guiding the band through many performances and leaving a memorable mark in the community.
"We thought to do this to say thanks for all the time he has given to the band," said Mark Broadbent.
Over 96 years, the Chatham Concert Band has been directed by only four conductors, with Vaughn Pugh holding the baton for 40 years.
In recognition of Vaughn's commitment, the band presented him with a ceremonial engraved baton during the celebration, symbolizing gratitude for all his music and leadership. In 1984, Band President Bill Patterson presented Vaughn with his baton and Patterson was also at Wednesday night's concert to recreate that significant moment.
"The baton signified him becoming a conductor in 1984, and Bill agreed to recreate that moment to present him with another baton again after all these years," said Broadbent.
Vaughn's legacy as a conductor will resonate for generations, as the Chatham Concert Band has a free Music Learning Program.
The program is open to ages seven and up; all ages are welcome, and parents can join too.
The Music Makers Program is offered free of charge to all participants.
