Work underway to expand landfill north of Dresden

A councillor from Dresden is trying to get to the bottom of a proposal to expand and use a landfill north of Dresden around the clock.

Jamie McGrail told CKNewsToday.ca the 24/7 trucks proposed for the landfill at 29831 Irish School Road are a big concern for her and her constituents.

"I have had a large amount of emails and discussions in regards to York 1 coming into Dresden in regards to a dump," said McGrail. "First, these letters are generated by York 1. York 1 has not made any formal requests to the Municipality. Council has not made any decisions regarding this."

McGrail said she will be bringing up the waste facility amendment at the Chatham-Kent council meeting Monday evening.

She is also encouraging residents make their voices heard and submit a comment about the project on the provincial website dedicated to the waste facility.

The proposal said the property holds existing Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) for a 35-hectare waste disposal site with an 8-hectare landfilling area, and an ECA for a 0.8-hectare waste processing site that currently services the province.

The company is applying for an expansion of the existing waste processing site from 0.8-hectares to 25 hectares to be used for the storage, transfer, and processing of non-hazardous solid waste from industrial, commercial, institutional, and municipal sectors.

York1 Environmental Waste Solutions Ltd. said the proposed amendment to the waste processing facility will also allow a maximum daily receiving rate of 6,000 tonnes per day of non-hazardous solid waste, including construction and demolition waste, and excess soil for beneficial reuse, and 1,000 tonnes per day of residual waste for final disposal on an annual average basis.

The proposal also seeks the maximum storage volumes at the waste processing facility be amended to indoor storage of 1,800 tonnes of residual waste for transfer including source separated organics; outdoor storage of 3,000 tonnes of recyclable materials such as wood, brick, block, concrete, asphalt, shingles, metals, and drywall; and outdoor storage of 30,000 tonnes of non-hazardous solid waste consisting of unprocessed and processed soil.

The proposed amendment also includes construction of a new processing/sorting building capable of indoor storage of all incoming mixed solid non-hazardous waste with the associated leachate collection and storage system; addition of sorted blue box materials, source-separated organics, asbestos-containing materials, tires, and soil, soil-like materials and excess soil for beneficial reuse; installation of stationary equipment for processing construction and demolition waste into alternative low-carbon fuels in the new processing/sorting building; placement of mobile diesel-powered shredding/grinding equipment for wood/construction and demolition waste outdoors; installation of a soil treatment/soil washing system for processing solid and liquid soil to recover sand and aggregate material (optional); construction of a stormwater management infrastructure.

Steven Peacock said Dresden residents are outraged and don't want the dump because it'll go on wetlands.

Dresden resident Mary Holsker Hoyles posted on social media that the landfill shouldn't be located just outside of town and there are concerns it will affect wildlife.

Dave Willson Jr. said he definitely doesn't want this directly across from his house with trucks going in and out 24/7.

Thomas S. Peacock said the smell is detrimental to humans and wildlife.
