Gearing up for Coldest Night of the Year walk

Over 100 walkers are getting ready to hit the sidewalks in Chatham for the Coldest Night of the Year.

The annual event is set for Saturday, February 24.

"Something to do in February, right in the middle, almost to the end of winter," said Al Baker, the Managing Director of NeighbourLink Chatham-Kent. "People are getting a little antsy and cabin fever and that kind of thing. They want to get outside and do something, get a little bit of exercise, have a hot meal, and do something good for the community."

NeighbourLink CK is a non-profit organization in Chatham that connects people in need with people who can help.

"The biggest thing that we do is provide free transportation to medical appointments, and other necessary things for people who simply can't get out," said Baker. "They can't get there for whatever reason, they don't vehicles, or they can't afford public transit, so we will get them there for free."

Baker added that they are always in need of more volunteer drivers.

The fundraising goal for the Coldest Night of the Year walk is $60,000.

"We do apply for grants, but you can only do that for specific programs. We actually need to raise some funds for general operations. We don't get any regular government funding, so this is why we do it," Baker said.

At last check, they had raised over $35,000.
