Special Olympics School Championships come to a close

The Special Olympics School Championships have come to an end after a whirlwind two days of competition and comradery.

Medals for the events were handed out Wednesday afternoon at all three locations of the games and the athletes at Chatham Kent Secondary School were in high spirits despite how intensely packed the last two days were.

"I'm feeling okay, it's been a long two days," said grade 12 Alexander Mackenzie student Leland Vorster.

Vorster competed in the men's 200m track and while he didn't finish where he was hoping to, he did have a great time.

"I would do it all over again," said Vorster.

Vorster's teammate Caden James Sylvester echoes his friend's sentiments and loved being able to participate in the games.

"It was pretty competitive and exciting," said Sylvester.

Mylène Charette, a grade 12 student from Casselman, won a silver medal, in her division, for the 100m run.

"I feel a little bit happy. And I really, really hope my grandma is proud of me," said Charette.

No stranger to winning medals, grade nine student Ethan MacIntosh from Scarborough won a bronze medal for the 4kg shot put.

"It feels really good, I have a ton of trophies at home and I really want to add to my collection," said MacIntosh. "It felt great being out competing and winning medals."

The student-athlete competed in three track and field events but he admits that there's one event he likes the most.

"I really liked the shot put because I like throwing that heavy ball. I did very well. I came in third place," said MacIntosh.

The closing ceremonies took place at the John D. Bradley Centre and an athlete dance will cap off the activities before everyone heads home on Thursday.
