Family gripped by sorrow after young man's drowning in Dresden

The family of a young man who recently drowned in Dresden is getting help to send his body back home to India.

Nomit Goswami, 20, an international student studying in London, tragically drowned in a swimming pool at a home on Cross Street in Dresden Sunday evening.

Family friend and GoFundMe organizer Parag Sethi posted he is raising funds to pay tribute to his friend and to support Goswami's final journey home.

Sethi said Goswami came to Canada as an international student in January 2024.

"We are devastated by this loss and wish to send Nomit’s body back to India to be with his parents," read Sethi's post on GoFundMe. "Any support to help cover the funeral and transportation costs would be deeply appreciated."

Sethi noted any remaining amount will be transferred to Nomit’s father's bank account in India to support them financially during "this tough time."

As of Friday morning, approximately $26,000 had been raised. The goal is to raise $30,000.

The Amar Ujala newspaper in India reported Goswami went to a friend's party on Sunday and the drowning happened when he decided to go swimming alone. Amar Ujala also reported despite his friends' efforts to save him and get him to the hospital, he was declared dead.

The deceased’s mother told Hindustan Times in India that she spoke to her son before the party and asked him to stay away from the pool, adding her son was "very happy" with his new job at a restaurant.

The newspapers reported Goswami was studying hotel management and his family sold a plot to raise the money to send him abroad.

According to The Free Press Journal in India, the victim's father also expressed the sorrow that has gripped his family.

"He was my youngest son. We had sold a plot and spent Rs 23 lakh (roughly $33,000 Cdn) to fulfill Nomit's dream of studying abroad. He had just started working at a restaurant in Ontario about one and a half months ago. He was balancing work and studies so well,” the father told the Free Press.
