Controlled burn to take place on Pelee Island Wednesday

A controlled burn announced last month will be conducted on Pelee Island.

Ontario Nature will perform the burn Wednesday with Lands and Forests Consulting, on the Ontario Nature-owned portion of the Stone Road Alvar. Officials have determined that conditions will be present on Wednesday for a successful burn.

"Throughout history, fire has revitalized the Alvar, keeping it open and free of shrubbery, allowing rare plants and animals to flourish," read a release from Ontario Nature. "Periodic prescribed burns will provide the same results in a controlled fashion."

The burn will begin between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. and last about three hours. Even with smoldering logs, work should be completed by 6 p.m.

Stone Road will be closed to traffic during the burn and re-opened immediately after. Staff will be available during the burn to answer questions.
