Flooding from Thames River expected to continue in Chatham

Water levels in Chatham-Kent are expected to continue rising over the next 24 hours.

According to the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA), the Thames River could rise another 25 to 35 cm in the Chatham area.

Areas in Chatham around the river have already experienced some flooding. This includes the downtown sidewalk along the river and Simcoe Lane, as well as multiple properties that back onto the river.

"As the Thames River is still expected to rise, some additional flooding in these areas should be expected.  After the peak arrives, water levels on the river should be expected to remain high into the middle of the week," read a statement from LTVCA.

Water levels are currently high around Thamesville; however, the community isn't expected to experience any flooding from the Thames River.

"Water levels in the creeks and drains that pass through the community could still rise higher due to water backing up from the Thames River," added LTVCA.

People are being asked to avoid the river, ditches, and streams.
