Old retirement home in Dresden could get new lease on life

We finally know what the former Park Street Place Retirement Residence in Dresden will become.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is being asked to turn the once beleaguered seniors' home at 650 Park Street in Dresden into an apartment building.

The former Park Street Place had its licence revoked in 2024 because the owners had significant debt troubles and couldn't properly manage the home or take proper care of its residents.

The home was eventually sold to the new owners in May 2024 for $1.2 million.

Councill will be asked on Monday night at its meeting to rezone the property.

A public information session was required before the rezoning could move ahead and it was held at the property on May 22, 2025 with approximately 43 residents voicing their opinions.

They expressed the need for housing options for seniors, were concerned over the proposed units size and the residents, shared concerns about the impact on property values, and noted there was a lack of notice and opportunity to participate in the public process.

Staff said the proposal represents a good example of adaptive re-use of an existing building that is currently underutilized, it supports the efficient use of lands and resources, and responds to the housing need across Chatham-Kent.

Administration also said a notice about the matter was mailed to all neighbouring property owners in early April and deputations were received by council at its meeting on April 28, 2025.
