New wind farm proposed for CK

Chatham-Kent could soon be home to a large wind farm.

Capstone Infrastructure Corporation is proposing to build a 200 megawatt (MW) facility across South Kent and East Kent.

This farm would consist of 25 to 30 wind turbines.

"Ontario’s electricity sector is seeing growing demand and the province, through the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), is planning to undertake large-scale resource acquisition to ensure sufficient supply will be available into the 2030s and beyond," read a description of the project by Capstone.

This proposed project comes less than a year after CK's council rejected a motion from Councillor Rhonda Jubenville aiming to ban future wind farms in the municipality. Multiple council members had issues with an outright ban, instead supporting a case-by-case basis.

Jubenville told CK News Today her views on wind turbines has not changed.

"I don't see the value environmentally or financially," she said.

The company will be holding two community information sessions in Blenheim on Thursday. Both will happen at Willow Ridge Golf & Country Club, with the first session happening from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the second session going from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"I'm going to the meeting to get more information, to see where they're at," added Jubenville.

Capstone's project has not been approved. It's currently in the initial early phase of development.

Meanwhile, the company is planning to hold another, more detailed, session later in the summer.
