A dealership in Dutton has been reduced to ashes after a fire in a busy area of downtown.
The Municipality of Dutton Dunwich said fire crews were dispatched to Cotrac Ford Lincoln at 204 Currie Road in Dutton just before 10 p.m. on Wednesday and found the building fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire and prevent the spread to adjacent structures, but the municipality said that a nearby apartment building was evacuated due to heavy smoke and the risk of flames spreading.
Residents were offered shelter at the Dutton Dunwich Community Centre and were given the all clear to return to their apartments at 5 a.m. on Thursday, according to the municipality.
Municipal officials also reported that crews were still on scene Thursday morning to extinguish hot spots.
Officials noted there is no estimate of fire damage yet, but it appears as though "the structure is a complete loss."
The Fire Marshall has been contacted to investigate the blaze.
Dutton Mayor Mike Hentz said their hearts go out to the owners, employees, and their families during this difficult time.
"I was deeply saddened to learn of the devastating fire that destroyed Cotrac Ford. First and foremost, we are grateful that no lives were lost and that emergency services responded quickly to contain the situation and protect the surrounding area," said Mayor Hentz. "Cotrac has been a valued part of our community -- not only as a place of business, but as integral part of Dutton’s downtown core. We know how much this loss hurts, and we stand with you."
The mayor is also thanking firefighters and first responders for their courage and professionalism, adding their efforts helped prevent an even greater tragedy.
No injured were reported, said the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
