CK officials set to discuss housing, Dresden landfill at AMO conference

Several members of Chatham-Kent's (CK) council and the municipality's administration are in Ottawa taking part in the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Annual Conference.

The multi-day event gives municipalities the chance to share issues and concerns directly with members of the Ontario Government.

Dave Taylor, CK's Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), told CK News Today it's important to take part, even if nothing comes out of it from the province.

"It can sometimes feel frustrating that there's a large gap in time between the conference and seeing results from the province, but we have to continue to advocate," he said.

Two of the bigger issues the municipality is hoping to discuss are housing and the Dresden landfill.

When it comes to the landfill, Taylor explained the message hasn't changed.

"It's continuing to advocate that this is wrong for Chatham-Kent, but also wrong for the province," he added.

As for housing and homelessness, the ask also continues to be the same.

"What we need is money and we need it now," added Taylor.

This ask includes funding for short and long-term solutions. Taylor explained the municipality also plans on highlighting the impact this is having on local taxpayers, when it should be funded by the higher levels of government.

Other issues the municipality plans on bringing up include funding for agribusinesses, support towards remediating and redeveloping underused or contaminated industrial and commercial properties, and a possible investment into the CK Community Hub.

Meanwhile, the municipality plans to use the conference as a way to meet with representatives from other areas.

Mayor Darrin Canniff called the event a perfect spot to network.

"That's the really important piece, be here and be seen. It's better to have a friend when you need one then trying to make one," he said.

Along with networking, the municipality also plans on highlighting the issues its dealing with other municipal representatives. Specifically, a big focus will be sharing the municipality's fight against the landfill, mentioning that other areas could be impacted in the future.
