Former Tigers Trammell and Morris Head to Cooperstown

Two members of the 1984 World Series champion Detroit Tigers are finally getting the call.

Former Tigers shortstop and manager Alan Trammell and pitcher Jack Morris have been voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

The two players were the only ones chosen by the Hall of Fame's Modern Era committee Sunday and will join the Hall's class of 2018 next summer.

Since this was a vote by a committee and not by baseball sportswriters, rules of induction are different. Players needed to be named on at least 12 out of 16 ballots for induction. Morris received 14, Trammell 13.

Both players had previously appeared on the baseball writers' ballot for the maximum number of years, but neither ever received the 75% needed for induction.

Trammell played shortstop for Detroit from 1977 to 1996, his entire playing career. He had a career batting average of .285 with 2,365 hits, 185 home runs and 1,003 runs batted in. He was named an All-Star six times, and won four Gold Glove Awards for shortstop. He was also the 1984 World Series Most Valuable Player.

Trammell also managed the Tigers from 2003 to 2005, and was fired after posting a 186-300 record. He also served as interim manager for the Chicago Cubs in 2007 and the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014. Trammell now works in the Tigers' front office as a special assistant to the general manager.

Morris began his career with Detroit in 1977 and pitched for the Tigers for 13 seasons. He also played for the Minnesota Twins in 1991, the Toronto Blue Jays in 1992 and 1993, and the Cleveland Indians in 1994. He won World Series rings in Detroit in 1984, plus all three seasons in Minnesota and Toronto. He had a 254-186 record with 2,478 career strikeouts.

After retiring from baseball, Morris has served as a broadcast analyst on either TV or radio for the Twins, Blue Jays and Tigers.

The Tigers announced Sunday night that they will retire both Trammell's #3 and Morris' #47 during the 2018 baseball season.
