Jr. hockey wrap-up - October 27, 2018

Daniel Wellington scored a pair as the Mooretown Flags beat the Wallaceburg Lakers 6-1 at home Saturday night.

Mooretown in in fourth place in the PJHL Stobbs Division with 19 points. The Lakers are in last with two.

The Lakers scored first, when Cody Nicolaisen lit the lamp at 6:34 of the opening period. The Flags then scored back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead in the frame. Cameron Rombouts tied the game at 16:33 and Jake Vandersteen put Mooretown in the lead almost two minutes later.

The Flags added two more goals in the middle frame. Wellington's goal at 41 seconds in provided Mooretown with insurance, then Cameron Rannie scored on the power play just after the middle marker of the period.

Mooretown scored two more goals in the third, off the sticks of Brock Perry and Wellington once more.

Adam Mino stopped all but one of the 34 shots he faced in goal for the Flags. Travis Moore had 40 stops for Wallaceburg.

The Lakers are in Essex Tuesday night for a game with the 73s. The Flags are in Petrolia Thursday night.

Nicolas Grandy scored the opening and closing goal in the St. Thomas Stars' 6-2 over the Kings in Komoka.

The Stars move into fourth place in the GOJHL Western Conference leaderboard with 16 points. Komoka is now fifth with 14 points.

Grandy scored only goal of the first period, putting the Stars up 1-0.

St. Thomas extended their lead when Thomas McClatchie found the net early in the second period, but Blake McConnell-Barker scored back-to-back goals for the Kings. The first was at even-strength at 5:31, and the second was an equalizer scored on the power play, making the score 2-2 after 40 minutes.

The Stars then scored four straight power play goals as the Komoka penalty-kill unit seemed to take the night off. Mathew Shuckett gave St. Thomas the lead for good with his goal at 3:39. The next three goals came after the midway mark of the period, scored within two minutes of each other. Sean McGurn found the net first, followed by Jackson Brown, then Grandy's second goal.

Anthony Hurtubise stopped 18 shots on goal out of 20 for the Stars. Owen Say had 15 saves for Komoka.

The Kings travel to Strathroy Sunday night, while St. Thomas visits Sarnia Thursday.
