One high school in London has broken a provincial fundraising record in support of the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
The Vikings at A.B. Lucas Secondary School initially set out to reach $101,000, but when the donations were counted, the total amount raised had reached $120,000.
The A.B. Lucas set a record as the only high school in the province to raise more than $100,000 each year for three years in a row. The secondary school also raised the largest amount ever for a school in the Thames Valley District School Board, and also doubled what was raised by Western University this year.
“This year about 850 students were registered participants in our event. Approximately another 100 students and staff volunteered their time during the event to ensure its seamless execution,” says Sophia Nasiakos, department head of social sciences and humanities, in a news release.
The event culminated on June 5 with a 12-hour, overnight fundraising event where students and community members walked to celebrate the lives of those who are living with cancer, remember loved ones lost to cancer and fight against the disease.
