UTRCA Warns Of Swollen Waterways

The heavy rain of Monday has left creeks and rivers in the London area flowing faster than normal.

Because of the danger that presents, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is telling people to keep a safe distance.

Spokesperson Eleanor Heagy says water levels are higher and banks are slippery, and that can be very dangeous.

"Running water, when it is moving so fast, can be quite fascinating to watch," says Heagy. "But it's dangerous. The water is still quite cold and it's moving quite quickly."

Heagy says it's imporant to make sure children and pets stay away from the banks of rivers and creeks.

Much of the London area got 50-80mm of rain this week which, when added to the 40-70mm recieved a week ago, has left the ground saturated. That has resulted in the runoff that is causing the higher water levels.

Heagy says, depending on how much of the anticipated rain falls on Wednesday and Friday, these conditions  could last into the weekend.
