With the intention of improving accountability, the City of London plans to hire an "integrity commissioner."
The city posted the position on Friday and is looking for candidates. The integrity commissioner will report directly to city council.
“The role of the integrity commissioner is important to this council. It’s about setting a tone and about ensuring that we are holding ourselves accountable,” says London Mayor Matt Brown in a new release. “Council feels strongly about having a government that is open and transparent and this demonstrates exactly that."
The city says the integrity commissioner will be responsible for investigating complaints and alleged breaches to the code of conduct for members, reviewing the code of conduct annually and recommending changes to council, serving as an advisor to members of council in relation to the code of conduct, acting as a proactive educator, and providing semi-annual reports to council about the commissioner’s activities.
The appointment will be for a two-year term, with a possible extension for two additional two years terms.
