Uber, Auto Insurance Company Partner To Develop New Policies

Uber is partnering with Intact Financial Corporation to develop policies for drivers who use the ride-sharing service.

Uber has come under heavy fire in London and several other Ontario cities for not abiding by local bylaws.

Intact Financial Corporation says the goal is to develop tailored insurance products for Uber.

"With the growing popularity of the sharing and on-demand economy, we are adapting our product range to offer innovative solutions to meet the changing needs of consumers," says IFC President Louis Gagnon in a statement.

Uber launched in London this July and outlined its specific driver requirements, stating the service was both safe and reliable, despite concerns from city council.

The company connects drivers in the city with those looking for a ride through a smartphone app. Uber says its drivers are screened and must be insured, but local bylaw officials say the company's requirements are not up to London's standards.

Just last week, the city announced undercover bylaw officers had charged a total of 18 drivers in Project Licensed Ride, a blitz targeting unlicensed vehicles for hire.

Under London's bylaws, a licensed driver must undergo a training exam, provide a criminal background check, a ministry drivers abstract and a medical certificate. Their vehicle must be no older than three years, have an interior forward facing camera system, $2-million in insurance and a ministry safety check.
