Have A Safe Halloween

It won't be a warm and clear night for trick or treaters.

But London police are hoping it will be a safe one. With the forecast calling for cloudy skies and the potential for rain, police are asking drivers to make sure they take extra care around the city as kids head out on their quest for candy.

But Constable Ken Steeves says it's not just drivers that have to be careful.

"Safety is a shared responsibility, not only for the kids to make sure they don't run out onto the roadway but also for adults and drivers," says Steeves. "We have to be more vigilant because a lot more pedestrians will be out and about, especially young kids."

Because of the expected cloud cover, trick or treaters won't be able to rely on moonlight to supplement the street lights in lightning their way from house to house. Steeves says that makes it important for kids to have costumes that fit properly.

"Parents need to make sure their kids costume fits well so they don't trip. If they are wearing a mask, parents need to make sure their child can see well," he says.

Police say kids should only go to homes that are well lit, only eat candy that is factory-wrapped and don't go trick or treating alone. They should also walk on the sidewalks and use crosswalks wherever possible.

Steeves says police will also be out making sure adults that are celebrating Hallowe'en do so in a safe manner. He says it's crucial that anyone who is drinking doesn't drive.

"Make sure you have a safe ride home and enjoy the holiday responsibly," says Steeves. "Those who are hosting a party, make sure their guests have a safe ride home as well."
