Hitting the snooze button may be to your advantage Friday morning as freezing rain expected to fall across southern Ontario will be short lived.
Forecasters say snow or ice pellets likely to fall in the London area overnight will change to freezing rain as the temperature approaches the freezing mark.
But Environment Canada Meteorologist Etienne Gregoire says people with late morning commutes will miss the whole weather episode.
"If you're an early commuter around 5am or 6am, there is a chance you'll run into it," says Gregoire. "But by then the temperature is going to be so close to the freezing mark that if it is freezing rain, it's going to be almost like a technical freezing rain, where you are barely below zero and it won't be long before you climb above that freezing mark by 7am or 8am."
Gregoire also doesn't expect any significant accumulation to come from the system that will usher in mild weekend temperatures.
"The leading edge is very narrow. I would be surprised if we see more than 1 or 2cm of snow and ice pellets in the leading edge," says Gregoire. "It's really a system that is moisture deprived especially for Southern Ontario. The bulk of it is well north towards Manitoulin Island, Central Ontario and Northern Ontario. For the southern part of the province there really isn't a lot of moisture with this system, not a lot more than 5mm maximum of possible precipitation throughout the day."
The burst of warmer weather comes as a westerly flow moves across the continent bringing with it highs of 7 C on Friday and 6 C on Saturday. Sunday will also be relatively mild with a high of 3 C.
The normal high temperature for this time of year is 0 C.
