Parents ushering kids around the city this March break can save a couple of bucks by taking the bus.
The London Transit Commission has announced children aged 12 and younger will be given free fare on city buses between March 12 to 20.
"It's an opportunity to get out of the house and explore the city a little bit," says Sheryl Rooth, chair of the LTC board. "There are a lot of March break camps and if you're working downtown, how convenient to hop on the bus with your child and take them to March break camp or any other event that is happening? It's a big initiative, we're really excited about it."
Children taking the bus must be accompanied by an adult, who will be subject to the regular fare.
The initiative was introduced as a way to help low income families shuttle kids from March break activities and help encourage kids to try public transit.
The LTC expects to lose roughly $4,000 in revenue over the course of the week but Rooth believes the benefits outweigh any financial hit.
"It's an investment in our city. It's an investment in our children and our families. Going forward we hope to instill that appreciation for public transit and how important it is to our city."
Kids aged five and younger always ride for free.
