Strong Month For Home Builders

April proved to be another busy month for London area home builders.

Figures released Monday by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation show work began on 181 new homes last month in the London census metropolitan area, which includes London, St. Thomas, Central Elgin, Southwold Township, Strathroy-Caradoc, Thames Centre, Middlesex Centre, and Adelaide-Metcalfe.

That is more than double the total from March and also represents a 36% increase over the same month in 2015.

The CMHC says single detached homes lead the way with ground being broken on 101 new houses, compared to just 55 a year ago. Multiple unit dwellings were also up a notch with 80 starts, two more than in April of last year.

Since January, work has began on 473 new homes in the area, a slight increase from the 470 starts over the same time period in 2015.

Nationally, there were 14,438 housing starts last month, up from 14,181 in April of last year.
