Police are asking to the public to stay safe as children in London take to the streets for a night of candy and scary costumes this Halloween Monday.
The OPP says parents should be sure to talk with their children before they head out trick-or-treating. Children should avoid wearing a mask at night as it restricts their view of traffic dangers, but costumes should have reflective tape on them so they're easily seen by drivers. As well, young trick-or-treaters should always go out in a group and with a responsible adult after dark.
Police also recommend that children follow these safety tips:
- Stay in neighbourhoods that you know. Only go to homes that are well lit. If the home is in darkness, pass it by.
- Do not go into homes or apartments, even if you are invited.
- Be caution of strangers and vehicle on the street.
- Do not cut across front lawns. There may be objects or other obstructions you may not see, which could cause you to trip.
- Obey the safety rules when crossing the street. Only cross in well-lit areas.
- If you’re suspicious of treats collected, throw them away.
Environment Canada is forecasting a dry Halloween for London, with a mix of sun and cloud during the day. The temperature is expected to reach a high of 11 C and then dip to around 5 C at night.
