City Committee To Discuss Discounted Bus Fares

A committee at London city hall will discuss possible changes to how LTC passes are discounted next week.

At next Tuesday's meeting of the Community and Protective Services committee, councillors will go over a report that recommends replacing a discount policy that dates back to the 1950s. That policy gave seniors a 25% discount. In the 1980s, people considered legally blind were allowed to ride the bus for free.

"Over the years, many groups have raised significant concerns about their inability to access the current program, and have requested that access to the program be broadened so that they too can benefit from the program. The current cost for a bus pass in London is $81 for a monthly pass," the report says.

After looking at how things are done in 12 other communities, city staff is recommending a broader range of people be allowed to access the discount program. It says people over the age of 18 who live below what's been called the "Low Income Cut Off" should be able to get a 50% discount on a bus pass ($40.50).

If council approves the recommendation, staff is recommending a pilot project that would begin January 1, 2018.
