Two years after a worker was burned by sulfuric acid, a Woodstock manufacturer has been hit with a hefty fine.
Bridgestone Canada Inc. was fined $70,000 after pleading guilty in provincial court Friday in the September 2015 incident at its Firestone Textiles Company on Dundas St. in Woodstock.
A technician at the plant was trying to transfer sulfuric acid from a 45-gallon drum into a two-litre plastic bottle to be used for lab testing when the hose nozzle connecting the two blew off. The employee was not wearing appropriate clothing to protect against the noxious liquid and suffered minor chemical burns.
The court found the company, which manufactures textile products, failed to ensure a worker exposed to hazardous gas, liquid, fume, or dust was wearing apparel sufficient to protect from injury.
An additional 25% victim fine surcharge was also imposed against the company.
