Company Fined After Mobile Home Falls And Kills Worker

A company is facing a significant fine after a mobile home fell and killed a worker at an RV campground east of London.

The Ministry of Labour said back on September 19, 2016, workers at Golden Pond RV Resort, located at 4340 Cromarty Dr. in Mossley, were moving the mobile home from one site to another when the mobile home shifted and fell off the jacks supporting it.  One worker was able to roll out from underneath but the home came down on top of another worker, who became pinned.

Patrick Carriere, 46, was rushed to hospital but succumbed to the injuries the next day.

A ministry investigation has determined that the soil under the blocks that were supporting the jacks, was damp and soft, which made the mobile home unstable.  The jacks had also been lifted too high, adding to the instability of the mobile home.

As a result, the ministry has found that AFTT Developments Inc., which operates as Golden Pond, failed to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.  On Thursday, the company was fined $70,000 and a 25% victim surcharge has been imposed, which is required by the Provincial Offences Act to assist victims of crime.
