There was no change in the unemployment rate in the London area last month as it stayed at its 14-year low.
According to Statistics Canada, the jobless rate in the London-St. Thomas area was 5.2 per cent in September, the same as it was in August. However, a deeper look at the numbers suggests things looked better in September than in August. The number of people working in the London census metropolitan area, which includes London, St. Thomas, Strathroy, and other surrounding communities, went up by 600 to a total of approximately 256,600.
The size of the labour force (the number of people working or looking for work) also increased by 600. However, the labour participation rate continues to be a concern. It was 61.4 per cent in September, still among the lowest in the country.
Nationally, the unemployment rate fell to 5.9 per cent as the economy saw a net increase of 63,000 jobs.
