Ontario Provincial Police in Norfolk County are reminding pet owners not to leave their furry friends in their vehicles.
Police received a call from a concerned citizen around 7 p.m. Friday, saying that a dog had been left in a car for about three hours. The car was parked in a lot off Oakwood Ave. in Simcoe, but OPP Constable Ed Sanchuk said the owner had returned and left the lot before officers arrived. No licence plate was provided.
The OPP is using this incident to remind people that domesticated animals are wholly dependent on their owners for food, water, shelter and general well-being. According to the Criminal Code, specific charges relating to the mistreatment of animals may result in maximum sentences ranging from two to five years in prison, depending on the offence.
Sanchuk also said that Norfolk County has a bylaw concerning care and control of animals. Anyone found guilty of leaving an animal unattended in a vehicle could face a fine of up to $490.
The OPP is urging pet owners to leave their animals at home. If you must bring your pet with you, never leave them in a vehicle unattended.
If you see an animal in a parked vehicle, or in any form of distress, gather as much information as you can about the vehicle and call police immediately.
