A Richmond Hill woman is facing impaired driving charges after police in Oxford County stopped a vehicle that was driving into oncoming traffic with a four-year-old in the backseat.
The Ontario Provincial Police said a concerned member of the public reported a possible impaired driver on Highway 401 near Cedar Creek Road on Thursday shortly after midnight. Not long after, the vehicle was spotted by officers as it turned off the 401 into oncoming traffic on Highway 2. The vehicle almost struck a pickup truck head-on before police stopped the driver and discovered the four-year-old child in the backseat.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Good Samaritan that immediately contacted police. Their quick-thinking actions not only allowed officers to locate this vehicle, it saved the lives of other innocent motorists as well as an innocent four-year-old child," said Inspector Tony Hymers, the Oxford County OPP detachment commander, in a media release.
As a result, a 45-year-old woman from Richmond Hill is now charged with two impaired driving charges and with having a blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams.
The York Region Children's Aid Society has also been contacted.
