Accused in OEV explosion appears in court

It was a brief court appearance Wednesday for the Kitchener woman charged with a dozen offences in connection with a massive summer explosion that destroyed multiple homes in London's Old East Village.

Daniella Leis, 23, kept her head down and said little during her first in-person appearance at the London courthouse. Wearing a black blazer, black top, and dark dress pants Leis stood beside her defence lawyer Richard Braiden as a Highway Traffic Act warning was read to her.

She quietly answered "yes" when asked if she had understood the warning.

Braiden asked for the case to be put over for five weeks to allow him time to receive and review disclosure from the Crown. As a result, the case was adjourned until November 6.

Leis is charged with four counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, four counts of driving with more than the legal limit of alcohol in her blood causing bodily harm, and four counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

The charges stem from a gas explosion on Woodman Avenue on August 14.

The blast happened minutes after a vehicle, which had been reportedly driving the wrong way on Queens Avenue, crashed into a home at 450 Woodman Ave., severing a gas line. The initial blast levelled 450 Woodman, while homes at 448 Woodman and 452 Woodman were torn down by crews in the days that followed.

A total of seven people - four firefighters, two police officers, and one civilian – were hurt in the explosion.

More than 100 homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution.
