Western librarians, archivists reject deal

The possibility of a strike at librarians and archivists at Western University is still alive after they rejected a tentative deal.

The University of Western Ontario Faculty Association (UWOFA), which represents the librarians and archivists, announced Tuesday that 74 per cent of its members voted to reject the deal that was reached on October 7.

"The members rejected the deal amid concerns that it did not address the serious erosion of librarian and archivist complement; their numbers have fallen by over 20 per cent in the past 10 years," the association said in a statement published on its website.

The deal was reached earlier this month, avoiding a strike by librarians and archivists. It was recommended for approval by the UWOFA bargaining committee.

While there has been no word yet on whether the librarians and archivists will go on strike, they remain in a legal strike position.
