A London-area high school boys hockey team has been suspended as provincial police investigate allegations of intimate images being shared without consent between players.
It is unclear when Middlesex OPP began probing the incident, but the Thames Valley District School Board confirmed Wednesday that, due to misconduct, the Medway High school boys hockey team has been benched.
“The Medway High School hockey team has been suspended from competition after its members were found in breach of the school’s Code of Conduct," Sheila Powell, superintendent of student achievement with the Thames Valley District school board, said in a statement emailed to Blackburn News. "Parents/Guardians have been informed and Thames Valley has no further public comment while a police investigation is underway."
Few details about the allegations have been released including the exact nature of the photos. There have been reports the images were shared via the popular app Snapchat.
Distributing intimate images of people without their consent is illegal in Canada. Distributing the same type of images of those younger than 18 can result in child pornography charges.
Middlesex OPP have only confirmed the crime unit has launched an investigation regarding the "sharing of intimate images without consent" at the Arva high school.
To date, no charges have been laid and the investigation is ongoing.
