Ten people have been displaced after a fire at a rooming house in east London.
Firefighters were called to the two-storey home at 302 Egerton Street, south of Grafton Street around 9:20 a.m. on Friday. The residents of the house were able to escape before crews arrived and no one was hurt.
"When fire crews arrived there was fire venting from an upper floor window," said Platoon Chief Shawn Fitzgerald. "There was a couple pets that were inside the building. They were located safe and sound."
London Transit provided a bus to temporarily shelter the displaced tenants.
The fire, which was contained to a second floor bedroom, was quickly extinguished and the building was ventilated by firefighters.
"The fire consumed the upper bedroom and there was heavy smoke damage throughout the second floor. But the fire was contained to the bedroom itself. The initial damage estimate is around $80,000," said Fitzgerald.
A fire inspector and London police are investigating the cause of the fire. The Ontario Fire Marshal has also been notified about the blaze.
