London police have been cleared of any wrongdoing in connection with the injury of a man who was hurt after jumping from a second storey balcony during his April arrest.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said on Wednesday it is terminating its investigation into the April 2 incident.
"Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, there is patently nothing to further investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer is concerned in connection with the man’s injury," said SIU Director Joseph Martino. "On this record, it is obvious that no one but the man is responsible for his self-inflicted injury. Consequently, the investigation is hereby discontinued, and the file is closed."
According to the SIU, police were called to the third-floor apartment about a domestic disturbance around 10 p.m. When officers arrived, the 30-year-old man scaled down from the unit's balcony to the one below. He then jumped from the second floor to the ground below. His right foot was injured when he hit the ground.
The man was arrested without incident.
The SIU investigates all reports involving police in which there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
