Five new cases of COVID-19 reported in London-area

There were no additional deaths, but just under half a dozen new COVID-19 cases were reported in the London region on Tuesday.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said five local residents tested positive for the virus over the last 24 hours. One of the new cases is linked to a long-term care home and involves a staff member. No specifics about the other four new cases have been released. Since the start of the pandemic, the London region has recorded a total of 590 confirmed cases, 460 of which have since been resolved.

The death toll stands at 57, with no new deaths reported since Friday.

The number of outbreaks within area long-term care and retirement facilities is holding at two -- Chelsey Park Retirement Community and Kensington Village.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, there was one new case of COVID-19 confirmed on Tuesday. It is the region's first new case since June 11. According to Southwestern Public Health, the health unit that oversees the two counties, there have been a total of 81 cases of COVID-19 confirmed since the start of the outbreak. There have been no new deaths related to the virus since April 22, leaving the death toll at four.

Seventy of the people confirmed to have COVID-19 in Elgin and Oxford have since recovered.

Ontario is once again reporting less than 200 new cases of the virus, the third straight day the number of daily cases has been that low.

Public health officials said 184 new cases were confirmed on Tuesday. There were also 11 additional deaths throughout the province.

To date, Ontario has seen 32,554 confirmed cases and 2,538 deaths, including 11 that were reported over the past 24 hours.

The number of resolved cases in the province increased by 218 to 27,431.

"With 218 more resolved, there are 34 fewer active cases in the province. Since Tuesday of last week, there are 1,245 fewer active cases," Health Minister Christine Elliott said in a tweet.

There are currently 413 people diagnosed with COVID-19 in Ontario hospitals, 98 of whom are in intensive care.

Testing for the virus remains up with 21,724 tests conducted in the province yesterday. In total, 1,047,224 tests have been completed since January with 17,920 tests under investigation.
