Elgin beach-goers reminded to physically distance, wash hands

As beaches in Elgin County reopen to the public, the area's medical officer of health is out with a few tips to protect beach-goers from COVID-19.

The county's beaches, including those in Port Burwell, Port Bruce, and Port Stanley, were reopened on Monday.

“Everyone’s been waiting excitedly for the beaches to open. We know that with the cooperation of all beach visitors, and the appropriate cautions in place, this can be a safe and fun summer at the lake," Dr. Joyce Lock, medical officer of health for Southwestern Public Health, said in a statement.

Lock recommends those looking to feel the sand between their toes follow three safety protocols while on the beach. They include shortening the length of your visit to prevent overcrowding, frequently washing or sanitizing of hands, and leaving space between your family and friends and other groups. In spaces where physical distancing is not possible, it is recommended face masks be worn.

"Of course, this year, you also won’t share beach toys and snacks with others," added Lock.

She said following these tips will help keep everyone on the beach safe from COVID-19.

In anticipation of demand for the beach being high, the county has set-up a Facebook page called Central Elgin Beach Rescue that will advise whether there is space available for visitors on area beaches. Uniformed staff will be patrolling the beaches reminding anyone who isn’t adhering to physical distancing rules to do so.

Public health officials are also asking anyone who is feeling sick or unwell to stay home.
