Children in London will still have a chance to learn how to swim this summer despite restrictions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The City of London has announced it will be offering modified swimming lessons beginning July 6.
“This is exciting news for anyone who’s looking to pick up a fun summer activity in light of COVID-19,” Mayor Ed Holder said in a statement. “The health measures we’ve introduced at aquatic centres will help keep swimmers and staff safe while lessons take place.”
Swimming lessons will be held at select pools that will reopen specifically for the 30-minute instructional sessions, according to the city.
Modifications to the program include lessons taught at a distance by qualified instructors, smaller class sizes, fewer lessons being simultaneously taught, and family/caregiver spectator restrictions.
“We know how important swim lessons are to the community,” said Lynn Loubert, the city's division manager of parks and recreation. “This essential life skill, of learning to swim, helps keep children safe in and around water, and we are excited to be able to provide lessons once again.
Registration for the modified swimming lessons will begin on July 2 at 8:30 a.m. Details can be found by clicking here.
All previously scheduled summer swim programs will be cancelled and a refund will be provided to those who have signed up.
Work to reopen outdoor pools for recreation and leisure swimming is continuing, the city said. An announcement on those facilities is expected early next week.
