Second COVID-19 town hall announced

For a second straight day, two new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in London-Middlesex.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said Thursday two additional people have tested positive for the virus. So far this week, the London area has seen seven new cases - two Sunday, one Monday, none Tuesday, and two each Wednesday and Thursday.

The region's total number of cases since the start of the pandemic is up to 726.

Seven infected individuals have recovered over the past 24 hours, raising the number of resolved cases to 644.

The London area's death toll remains at 57 with no new deaths reported since June 12.

Despite the relatively low numbers, concerns about the virus and a possible second wave remain high. That has prompted the health unit to schedule its second COVID-19 town hall. The online meeting is scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. It will include a presentation from Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Alex Summers and a question and answer period.

Over the course of the 90-minute town hall, residents will be permitted to electronically submit questions about the pandemic and the local response.

The health unit held a similar virtual question and answer session about the virus on August 17.

A link to Monday's virtual meeting will be posted on the health unit’s COVID-19 webpage at www.healthunit.com/novel-coronavirus.

Those with COVID-19 questions can also dial the health unit's hotline at 519-663-5317 and press 1.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, recorded a drop in COVID-19 cases on Thursday. The health unit said it had zero new cases over the last 24 hours. That comes a day after it reported a jump of six new cases. It's total case count now stands at 254. There were six more recoveries since Wednesday, increasing the number of resolved cases to 224. The region has not had a COVID-19 related death since July 3.

Ontario saw another triple-digit increase in COVID-19 cases on Thursday.

Public Health officials said there were 118 lab-confirmed cases of the virus. The jump back above 100 followed a one day dip into double-digit territory. A total of 88 new cases were reported on Wednesday.

Twenty-eight of Ontario’s 34 public health units recorded five or fewer cases, with 18 reporting no new cases on Thursday.

The province has now seen a total of 41,813 COVID-19 cases.

One additional person died from the virus since Wednesday. That brings Ontario's death toll up to 2,803.

The number of resolved cases in the province rose by 77 to 37,940.

Currently, 48 infected Ontarians are in hospital receiving treatment, with 18 in the intensive care unit.

Over the past 24 hours, the province has processed an additional 28,625 COVID-19 tests.
