London-Middlesex, Elgin-Oxford each report one new COVID-19 case

Health units in London-Middlesex and Elgin-Oxford are reporting just a single new case each of COVID-19.

The Middlesex London Health Unit confirmed on Friday one additional person had tested positive for the virus. However, the total number of cases remained at 743 as one previously reported infection was moved to another health unit's jurisdiction.

Four more people previously diagnosed with COVID-19 have since recovered, increasing the number of resolved cases to 677. The number of active cases of the virus in the area has dropped to nine.

There has not been a death in the London region since June 12. That leaves the death toll at 57.

Southwestern Public Health is reporting its first new COVID-19 case since August 26. The health unit that oversees Elgin and Oxford counties has seen 255 cases since the start of the pandemic.

The area's number of resolved cases went up by one to 248. The death toll is unchanged at five with no additional death reported since July 3.

There are now just two active cases in the region.

Provincially, the number of new COVID-19 cases continues to rise.

Ontario reported 213 new infections on Friday, the first time daily numbers have jumped above 200 since July 21.

Of the province's 34 health units, 26 reported five or fewer cases, including 18 that showed zero.

The biggest surge of new cases came again from the Toronto area and largely involved younger Ontarians.

"There are 71 cases in Toronto, with 38 in Peel and 37 in Ottawa. 67 per cent of today’s cases are in people under the age of 40," Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted.

She went on to urge residents to continue to abide by public safety guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19.

"Continuing to adhere to everyday actions like practicing physical distancing, wearing face coverings and washing your hands remain our best line of defence against this virus."

The increase of new COVID-19 cases comes on the same week some schools across Ontario opened their doors for the first time since March. Students at the London area's two largest school boards - the Thames Valley and London District Catholic school board - return to classrooms next week.

The province's total case count has risen above 44,000 to 44,068.

There were no additional deaths related to COVID-19 reported on Friday, leaving the death toll at 2,813.

Public health officials noted there were 124 more infected people who recovered over the last 24 hours. That puts the number of resolved cases in Ontario at 39,598.

There was a slight decrease in the number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals across the province with 49 people admitted. Of those, 18 are in the intensive care unit and nine are relying on ventilators to breathe.

In the last 24 hours, 32,501 additional COVID-19 tests were conducted in Ontario.
