The number of new COVID-19 cases in the London region went up by double-digits on Tuesday.
The Middlesex London Health Unit said ten more people have tested positive for the virus. That includes another long-term care home worker, the second to be infected in the last two days.
New outbreaks have been declared at Earls Court Village and Mount Hope Centre for Long-Term Care. That brings the total number of outbreaks at local long-term care and retirement facilities up to five. The other three outbreaks are at Country Terrace, Meadow Park Care Centre, and Peoplecare Oak Crossing. An outbreak at Ashwood Manor Retirement Home that had been ongoing since September 21 was declared over on Monday.
Since Sunday, the area has seen 24 new cases. The total case count for London and Middlesex County now stands at 912.
The number of people to recover from the virus has increased by seven to 798. The death toll is unchanged at 57.
There are currently 57 active cases in the region.
Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, reported no new infections over the past 24 hours. The area’s total number of cases since the start of the pandemic remains at 272.
The number of resolved cases in the region went up by one on Tuesday to 261, while the death toll stands at five, with no new COVID-19 deaths since July 3.
The region currently has six active cases.
Ontario’s new case load fell back below the 600 mark.
Public health officials confirmed 548 new cases of the virus on Tuesday. That is down from 615 reported on Monday.
"Locally, there are 201 new cases in Toronto, 90 in Peel, 62 in Ottawa and 56 in York Region. Sixty-one per cent of today’s cases are in people under the age of 40,” Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted.
Ontario’s total case count now stands at 55,362.
There were seven additional deaths in the province over the past 24 hours, increasing the death toll to 2,987. This is the province's highest number of deaths reported in a single day since July 17.
The number of Ontarians in hospital due to the virus has increased since Monday to 192. Of those, 41 are in the intensive care unit and 26 are relying on ventilators to breathe.
The number of resolved cases rose by 546 to 46,906.
The province says more than 42,000 COVID-19 tests were processed over the last 24-hour period.
