Nearly two dozen new COVID-19 cases in London-Middlesex

For the second day in a row, the number of new COVID-19 cases in London and Middlesex County went up by double-digits.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said Wednesday 11 more people tested positive for the virus. That includes a student at Saunders Secondary School who attended class while infectious. Those who were in close contact with the individual have been notified and asked to quarantine for 14 days by the health unit.

The 11 new cases reported on Wednesday is a slight increase over the ten cases confirmed on Tuesday. So far this week, there has been a total of 35 new infections in the region. The total number of local cases since the start of the pandemic is up to 922.

Outbreaks are ongoing at four area long-term care and retirement facilities - Earls Court Village, Mount Hope Centre for Long-Term Care, Meadow Park Care Centre, and Country Terrace. An outbreak at Peoplecare Oak Crossing that had been ongoing since September 24 has now been declared over.

Recoveries in the city and county went up by three over the last 24 hours to 801.

There has not been a COVID-19 related death in the area since June 12, leaving the number of deaths at 57.

Currently, there are 64 active cases in the region.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, there was one new infection confirmed on Wednesday. That brings the area's case count to 273. Southwestern Public Health, the health unit which oversees the two counties, reported three people have recovered from the virus to increase total resolved cases to 264. Five people in the two counties have died from COVID-19 since the start of the outbreak, with no additional deaths reported since July 3.

The area has just four active cases.

Ontario recorded another 583 new cases on Wednesday, up from 548 a day earlier.

The province's new case count has now been under the 600 mark for two consecutive days. On Monday, 615 new cases were logged.

Many of Wednesday's new cases were in Toronto, where 173 people tested positive. Another 121 are in Ottawa, 75 are in York Region, and 70 are in Peel. Of the new cases, 60 per cent are in people under the age of 40.

Ontario's total number of cases is 55,945.

One additional person died from the virus over the past 24 hours to increase the death toll to 2,988.

For the first time since early last month, there were more recoveries than new infections, with 707 people no longer infectious. That puts the total number of resolved cases up to 47,613.

There was a slight increase in the number of COVID-19 infected patients in hospitals across the province with 195 people admitted. Of those, 43 are in the intensive care unit and 28 are relying on ventilators to breathe.

In the last 24 hour period, nearly 43,300 COVID-19 tests were conducted in Ontario.
