Students at Emily Stowe Public School in Norwich, who were robbed of their Grade 8 graduation trip by COVID-19, have found a way to put the funds raised for the Quebec City excursion to good use.
The 54 students and their families have decided to donate the $12,887.27 raised for the cancelled trip to the Children’s Health Foundation, and the Otterville Optimist and Norwich Optimist clubs.
“It was unfortunate that our students and their families could not have the graduation event we all hoped for, but the school is very proud of the generosity that the students have demonstrated in giving back to charities in their community,” School Principal Christine Harrower said in a statement.
A survey was conducted among the graduates to determine which charities they most wanted to support.
Children’s Health Foundation and the two local Optimist clubs will get an even cut of the cash.
“I am so pleased that the Grade 8s chose our local Optimist club that puts the money right back into the community,” said Alison Vankerrebroek, Norwich Optimist Club president and Emily Stowe teacher. “I am so glad the Grade 8 class decided to keep the funds in the community.”
Vankerrebroek noted the money is more important than ever for the Optimist club as many of its traditional fundraisers weren't able to move forward due to pandemic related public health restrictions.
Otterville Optimist Club has vowed to spend the funds within the community in a way the students would be proud of.
The donation was also applauded by the president and CEO of the Children's Health Foundation.
"This year has been difficult, with many plans cancelled or postponed,” said Scott Fortnum. “While it is disappointing that these Grade 8 students missed out on a graduation trip, it is wonderful to see them find a way to make it still meaningful. This generous donation will support patients at Children's Hospital who are experiencing their own challenges in hospital during a pandemic.”
Students from the graduating class will formally present the donation to the three organizations in an outdoor ceremony at the school on November 14 at 2 p.m.
