Victoria Park lighting of the lights ceremony scrapped

Victoria Park will be decked out with lights and decorations as usual for the holidays, but the annual lighting of the lights ceremony has been cancelled.

City officials made the difficult decision to scrap the longstanding tradition that draws thousands of people to the downtown green space due to COVID-19. Current health measures in place to stop the spread of the virus limit the number of people allowed to gather.

While the late November event won't go forward, the city is still transforming the park into a winter wonderland. Crews began work this week stringing the roughly 75,000 lights around trees and on the bandshell. Classic holiday decorations such as the Christmas train and Santa Claus and his reindeer are also being setup. Santa's House will be back as well.

Once installation is complete the park will be illuminated nightly through to the New Year.

Additional information on when Londoners can begin enjoying the holiday lights will be released soon, city officials said.
