Damage from Flying M fire could top $1.5M

London fire officials say the damage bill from a fire at a south end truck stop could exceed $1.5 million.

Fire crews were called to the Flying M on Colonel Talbot Road on Monday afternoon. Fire had broken out in a garage area, sending a thick cloud of black smoke into the air.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

At one point, 35 firefighters with the London Fire Department were on scene. Additional crews with the Southwold Fire Department and Middlesex Fire Services were also called to assist with dousing the flames. Fire officials confirmed the fire was under control just before 7 p.m.

Colonel Talbot between Southminster Bourne and Orr Drive was closed while crews worked on the fire. Police opened the area just before midnight.

The London Fire Department said on Tuesday that investigators were on the scene, looking for the cause of the blaze. It added investigators are being assisted by the London Police Service, which is using its drone to provide aerial views of the site.

Investigators with the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office were also on the scene Tuesday.
