Mackie urges Londoners to keep following health guidelines

While the province's stay-at-home order was lifted on Wednesday, local health officials have asked Londoners to keep their distance for a little while longer.

Following a nearly two-month-long lockdown put in place by the Ontario government, restrictions that required residents and some workers to stay in their homes are no longer in place. However, limits on gatherings, services and business remain in effect.

Officials with the Middlesex London Health Unit acknowledge that even though it may seem safe or tempting to resume gatherings indoors with other people, you should refrain from doing so.

"We are at a critical point of the pandemic's third wave," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Chris Mackie. "Although we are seeing more people get vaccinated and case numbers in decline, mistakes now may end up being very costly."

Ontarians may have to wait close to two more weeks until there are more changes to existing health restrictions.

Step one of the province's "Roadmap to Reopen" plan will allow for some loosened restrictions when 60 per cent of all adults in Ontario are vaccinated with at least one dose, and a decline in the positivity and hospitalization rate occurs.

Once that happens, outdoor gatherings of up to 10 people and outdoor dining up to four people per table will be permitted. Non-essential retail will also be able to reopen at 15 per cent capacity. Provincial health officials predict Ontario will enter Step 1 around June 14.

Until then, Dr. Mackie is asking the community to be patient.

"We need people to continue following public health advice, avoiding gatherings with those who are not part of their household, and keeping up the effort to maintain physical distancing."

More information on the province's reopening plan can be found on the Ontario government's website.
