Infant severely burned in fire pit mishap dies from injuries

A 1-year-old girl who was badly burned alongside her parents and two siblings in a backyard fire pit mishap earlier this week has died from her injuries.

The small child died in Toronto hospital Thursday morning, family friend Eva Enns wrote in an update to an online fundraising campaign for the family.

"She has gone to be with Jesus. The family is heartbroken. They are asking for prayers of healing for all of them," Enns wrote.

Jake Heibert, 33, his wife Tina, 28, and three of their five children were severely injured while having a bonfire Monday night at a home on Vienna Line in Port Burwell. A seven-year-old girl, a four-year-old boy, and the one-year-old girl were rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the two adults suffered serious injuries.

The couple and the seven-year-old girl are being treated in London hospital. The 4-year-old boy is in Toronto hospital.

OPP and the Office of the Fire Marshal continue to investigate the mishap. There have been reports a jerry can filled with diesel fuel exploded, but that has not been confirmed by investigators.

A GoFundMe campaign launched on Tuesday to help the family with medical and hospital travel-related expenses has raised more than $42,000.
