A signal land borders could open to some Americans next month

So long as the pace of vaccinations and lower COVID-19 case counts continue, Canada may be ready to reopen its borders to fully vaccinated Americans by mid-August.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave Premiers and Territorial Leaders an update on talks with the U.S. during an update on the pandemic last night.

"He noted ongoing discussions with the United States on reopening plans and indicated that we could expect to start allowing fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents into Canada as of mid-August," said a readout of the meeting.

The readout continues, First Ministers supported the plan, and more details could be coming next week.

The country could be ready to accept fully-vaccinated travellers from all countries by mid-September, said the readout.

"Finally, First Ministers discussed the importance of working collaboratively on a proof of vaccination credential," it said, signalling the possibility of a vaccine passport.

There were 427 new cases of COVID-19 reported across Canada on Thursday, and 47.6 per cent of the population is now fully vaccinated.
